Ornette Coleman was a visionary saxophonist and a principal architect of the free jazz movement who radically altered the course of American music. His raw, blues-drenched playing abandoned traditional chord progressions to prioritize spontaneous melody and direct emotional expression above all else. By releasing watershed albums like The Shape Of Jazz To Come, he proved that a band could achieve true collective improvisation without restrictive harmonic rules, forever expanding the boundaries of the jazz canon.
